The Sun VS The Shade

In response to The Daily Post’s weekly photo challenge: “Half and Half.”

Nirvana with Vern 066
A bit of sun separates the mountains of Colombia.

Oftentimes I ride my mountain bike along the challenging roads in the mountains of La Buitrera, Colombia and I see  a distinct separation of the sun on part of the mountains and shade on part of the mountains. “A painting in front of me” I think. The beauty is formidable. May God grant me this beauty forever, and if I die tomorrow I hope my view is just like this wherever I go.

I'm an American woman who took a leap of faith and moved to Colombia 15 years ago after the devastating loss of my daughter. What began as a journey to find peace and heal a broken heart became an entirely new chapter of my life. Fifteen years later, Colombia isn't just where I live. It's my home, and a place that has taught me more about life, love, and myself than I ever could have imagined. I bought a villa in the mountains, renovated it, and created my own little piece of paradise, Villa Migelita Ecolodge. Along the way, I've embraced a new culture, learned Spanish (still a work in progress!), made wonderful friendships, and discovered that life has a funny way of surprising us when we least expect it. My life here is filled with hummingbirds, breathtaking mountain views, unexpected adventures, occasional chaos, and plenty of stories that sometimes seem too unbelievable to be true! Hummings from Paradise is my way of sharing it all. The beautiful moments, the challenges, the laughter, the tears, and the lessons I've learned along the way. I believe life is a book filled with chapters, and I'm still writing mine. Some chapters are heartbreaking, others are hilarious, but every one has helped shape the woman I am today. I hope you'll follow along as I continue discovering not only this beautiful country I've come to call home, but also a little more about myself. And believe me, there's never a dull moment in paradise!

  1. That’s very beautiful, and it’s good that you pointed out the sunshine, it made me look at the photo more closely. When I see views like this I often imagine the difference between anyone who is stood in that sunshine and me in the shade, it’s quite an odd thought.

    1. No it is an artistic thought, as I sometimes think the same. Here in Colombia people walk these mountains with bags full of produce or products. They live these mountains for years and years never leaving. I think of all of that when I see this beauty. I wonder if they realize the beauty they live in. I sometimes feel I am in the shade looking at them and wanting to know their thoughts.

      1. That’s such a lovely sentiment, to think of them living that out their days amidst all of that. I think it’s human nature not to appreciate what’s right in front of you, but hopefully they do realise. It’s quite a metaphor for life really, that you need to step back and see something from afar to realise what it’s all about.

      2. Yes exactly Laura…exactly. It makes me appreciate what I have and what I have done in life. I really feel that since I have moved to Colombia I have to take a step back from everything I have done in my life.

    1. I enjoy every second of my life here in the Colombian mountains that change every time I look at them…sometimes it is so clear they are bathed in sunlight, other times just a touch of sun, and then when it is cloudy the clouds look magical. xo
