Orion and the Gang of Misfits

The Veterinarian who is treating Orion is a great man. He is a man of compassion. He is a genius. He performs miracles. His little clinic in Cali is famous in the country of Colombia. He is known for saving dogs from injuries no one else will touch. He is truly a miracle worker. My dog Orion is a patient and the care he is receiving is exceptional.

The waiting area

When I enter the clinic I see misfits, animals that look like they have survived a war. They are all around, resting on little mats after undergoing surgery, on leashes held by their owners, getting therapy in the exam rooms, or being seen by the doctor. Shaved body parts, casts, and limping are normal in this veterinary office. This clinic is not fancy. In fact it is a bit outdated. One would think walking into this office that it was nothing. I did. However, then I started talking with the people who are sitting and waiting with their wounded animals. We all share one thing: love for our four-legged children. Orion is always scared when we arrive. He hates riding in the truck. He remembers when he broke his front paw that he had to stay in a kennel and he has never gotten over it. He pants, he is restless, he shakes, and he tries to get the muzzle off that we put on him. Orion is a Dogo Argentino, a class of dog required to be muzzled. He doesn’t need to be. He is gentle and timid. He wags his tail even when scared. He allows everyone to poke and prod him, but he is so un-nerved. Orion pants and pants. Water is given to him when in therapy which he laps up. My heart breaks as I look around. There in a corner is an amputee dog, crying out, just out of surgery. Another mat has an old Chow who has lost all its hair and has dementia, but the owners cannot let go, a mini-Schnauzer with a cast on its front leg, an older Retriever with an injury on the front leg, a chocolate Lab walking pretty well on a broken leg the same as Orion which gives me hope. The little street animals brought in by compassionate people. A girl drove three hours with a puppy that had a crooked back leg. She was a street dog, probably hit by a car. This girl is a hero to me. She can’t keep the dog but is paying to have her leg fixed. She said to me she will find her a home. The dog will need to come back to see the doctor after surgery. She is willing to do this. I know there are really good people in the world when I see this sort of compassion.

I have made many friends in this little veterinary clinic. We all talk about our dogs when we see each other. We wait patiently for our turn with the therapists, and we share our war stories. Dogs bark and whine as we talk over them. We describe our dogs accomplishments since our last visit. We watch as someone new enters with an injured animal knowing all too well the journey they will be starting. First the surgery and then the recovery. We all share a common bond, a love for our four-legged child who has been horribly injured. A bell rings and Orion’s name is called. It is his turn for Acupuncture. He is drooling from nervousness. We calm him with kisses and pats. He patiently lets the doctor stick needles in him. He gets heat therapy on his bad leg, then he has to lay calmly and wait a while.

Orion

Orion is ready to go and he gets up and puts weight on his leg immediately after his treatment. Not a lot, but enough to let me know he will be walking normally soon. My heart is happy. We have seen Orion go from depressed with rods in his leg and a cast on the thigh, to now being able to get around quite well. He is back to his sunny disposition as soon as we settle in the car for our hour ride back home. Orion drops his head for a much needed snooze. He knows it is over for now. He can relax. When we arrive at the farm, he is greeted by his pack. They all sniff him and the strange smells he carries from the veterinary office. Orion goes and stretches out on the grass. He rolls with delight at surviving another visit with the vet, and soaks up the sun. Life is good.

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Choose Your Adventure.”

When she bought the farm she had no idea how much land she actually owned. She knew the little church in her pueblo was on her land. There was a legend often repeated by towns folk. They said there was gold buried by the Indians on her land. Sometimes at night when all was quiet she would hear strange sounds like a door opening, or knocking, but she dismissed it as the wind and an overactive imagination. She liked the mystery that surrounded her home.

One night it was really stormy, the basement entry was left open and she could hear the door blow open and creak from the rusty hinges. She heard her dogs howling. The wind was making the curtains blow in her bedroom. She got up to close the windows, as the rain really started coming down in torrents. She saw a shadow run across the land. She knew it was nothing, probably an opossum, but with the dogs growling and whining she needed to investigate. Flashlight in hand she went out into the night. She felt no fear as life on the farm included storms, power outages, and sometimes storms that came out of nowhere. She just wanted to shut that creaking entrance-way to the basement and go back to bed.

She could hear that door moving as she approached the basement. The dogs were all around her, and there was no reason for fear…her dogs were her mighty protectors. She entered the basement and flipped the light switch. Nothing happened. Now, there was no electricity and the storm grew stronger. She entered the basement although she just needed to close the door. The flashlight led her and she saw an opening she had never seen before. There was a passageway that looked like stairs going down. She put the light from her flashlight on this space. She knew better, but she had to descend. She found herself in a tunnel. She knew she was crazy but kept walking along a dark pathway. Her dogs were behind her. She started to ascend. She was at a trap door; which she pushed and it opened! She shown her light around and she was inside the church that was on her land! The opening was the storage area of the church, and a key was plainly visible. “Where does this key fit?” she wondered. She grabbed the key and ran back down the passageway as she now felt frightened. The key clutched in her hand. She re-entered the basement. There in front of her was a sight that was unexpected…it was like the basement had shifted. It was no longer storage for her suitcases and old clothes. It was a city that was from a time past, a place that looked nothing like the world she lived in. There was a church with an old wooden door, the door was incredible with inlaid carvings. There was a keyhole. She wondered if the key she held tightly in her hand would fit. She walked over and put the key in the door: it turned and clicked. She pushed the wood slightly, and she watched as the door opened to a magnificent room filled with light. Her being felt lighter, her heart pumped rapidly. She saw sights she never thought she could see in her life. “Was this a dream, or did she enter Paradise?” She saw people from her past, some dead, some still alive, but they were in front of her at this moment. She wondered how she became entwined inside this time warp. There were her parents, her daughter, a friend she knew had died too young. There also were people from her present world, they were still alive. They all were smiling and trying to talk to her. The sounds came out as melodic, like a choir of angels singing, but she couldn’t really hear what they were saying to her. Then she was given a letter, she was able to understand every voice at once: “Burn this after you read it!” She took the letter and all the glorious sounds disappeared. She was standing in the basement once again surrounded by suitcases. The letter was in her hand.

A Key to the Past

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “In a Crisis.”

I know I react well in emergencies, I trained for over thirty years to do just that. It is something the flying public does not take seriously, although they should. We flight attendants  know a lot about safety, first aid, terrorism, hijacking, disagreements between passengers, complaining, and most of all being nice to even the worse of the worst. Everyone should read this post, share it and take it seriously if you fly for travel or business. I might be retired but I can still act quickly if I need to. When I fly now I am a passenger, but I am an aware passenger that takes in everything around me. I am ready to help in an emergency. I thank my training every year for thirty years for that! Flight attendants are not on the plane to serve drinks and food, they are there for safety. Over the span of my thirty years of flying I had to prepare for an emergency a few times, luckily we always landed safely. Not to mention the medical emergencies I encountered many times. These emergencies are more common and your flight attendant knows CPR, how to check symptoms, they have at their fingertips difibulators, also emergency supplies for most illnesses. We even have the ability to call a medical person to talk us through all situations that could arise.

I read so much stuff about the airlines all the time, but the one thing I never read enough of is how we the flight attendants are the FIRST to respond in any given situation. We are the ones who alert the pilots. We are the ones on the frontline while providing vital information to the cockpit. We are the ones who look for passengers that might be able to help and we are the ones trained to safely seat you in an emergency landing. We also serve you and act professional while doing so. Next time you get on a plane that has been delayed for whatever reason, remember when you are taking your frustration out on these savvy stews, they are NOT there to stow your luggage, or to re-book your flight. They are there to make sure you can exit the plane in an emergency. They are there to help you if you have a heart attack or any medical emergency, they are there to get you safely from point A to point B. They give the flying public good customer service, and this is part of the job description, but the sole reason you have a trained professional and not just a person off the street who can make a cocktail is for one reason only. We can save your life if we need to.

Success is a Patient Journey

Patience; we all need more of it in our lives. With patience comes wisdom, with wisdom comes enlightenment, with enlightenment comes acknowledgement, and with acknowledgement you will be on the road to success. I’ve been patiently building my dream for five years now. It started out as a dream in my mind before I found my Villa and started renovating it. While I was living here, I realized I wanted others to see my place of peace and exquisite beauty undiscovered by tourists, a place people who like nature would enjoy. I started talking about my dream to others, and then working at fulfilling my dream. I knew it might take me a while to get attention and interest. Colombia has long-held an undeserved reputation as “bad”, a country where people think cartels roam the streets fighting drug wars. A fallacy so ridiculous and undeserved that it made me want to show the truth about Colombia, and how this country has turned around with persistent efforts. I understand Colombia’s predicament; I also have turned my life around with persistent effort. Success in not only monetary, success is also a place where you can feel proud of your achievements.

So how does one decide they are successful? Success is a process, a direction, a way of living. Let’s start with the process first. I decided I needed to change my life due to an unhappy marriage. Once divorced I needed a direction because I had flourished a long time in nowhere land. I knew I needed certain things in my life that were non-negotiable; my animals, a place to live with them comfortably, I needed health insurance, and I needed peace. When in the midst of life’s chaos this is the time you really need to listen to that inner voice and make decisions based on what you want, only you can prepare your road to success. You need forgo the worry of what others might think, and just follow your own guidance based on your wants. People will probably make fun of you, laugh at you and talk behind your back. I had all of that happen, but I kept on track and now I’m seeing results.

Once I started the process I proceeded to the direction part of my journey. I started talking and talking about my dream. Yes, I needed to talk about it! I realized I had to go slow and take my time but I still felt very confident I would succeed. Talking about my vision made it more real. To succeed is to live your truth and do what makes you feel alive. I just focused on what was important to me. If you have a dream write it down. Start visualizing it in your mind. Try to keep it simple. I did. I kept my thoughts on what I envisioned. Keep it to two or three things you need to do to start your journey. Maybe you hate your job. Then start looking for a new one. Write down what you want. Then act on those written words. Send resumes, go to job interviews, but most of all believe in yourself!

The last step is to live the way you want your life to be. I can say unequivocally I am living the life I want. I want peace, freedom, nature, and no negativity. Sometimes, it is hard to distance oneself from the negative. It is all around us because of social media. However, we don’t need to let that ruin our personal space. I have not unfriended people but I ‘hide’ posts from sources that are negative. No one knows, just you. Also, try to just live as you want. Say NO to people who ask you to do something you are not interested in. Remember you are your own best friend. What other’s think is their own business. Believe me when I say they talk about everyone those negative people! No worries, hide them if you won’t delete them. YOU are the most important thing when you are looking for success. Nothing else. BE who you are. I am. I show myself to the world. Do I get negativity still? Of course. Does it bother me? No. I KNOW who I am. I am a woman on a journey to success. A person who worked for years for a company as an employee. I appreciate what I learned while being a flight attendant. I am a master in public relations. Thirty years of flying the skies made me that way. I now have started my business. If it is successful, it will be because I did what I needed to do. I followed my path and instincts. No one influenced me. That is why with success you need to be patient. It is not an overnight thing. It is a journey. One I am enjoying.

A broken femur bone

A time will come when you no longer run with such carelessness. You will lay quietly in old age and sleep away your days. No longer will I worry about a broken bone. But then I will worry about the years left with me. For now, I try to keep you still, comfortable, and without pain. Heal quickly dear Orion, and remember our love for you will never be broken like your leg. It will just get stronger with the passing years.Orion and butterfly 001

An Ode to Orion

10459092_689725637760172_5238165932732310864_oDear Orion,

You make my heart smile. From the first moment I saw you, I knew you were special. You were desperate for a home, you had too many owners in your short life. You were thin, your ribs showed. You were very big, intimidating by your size, but your eyes were so sad. I fell in love with those eyes, you looked scared and you were hungry. Previous owners had no idea what your breed was, they thought they were getting a Pitbull. You grew so large and they couldn’t accommodate your needs. You needed to be able to run and play. You required food twice a day, real dog food not leftovers from the kitchen. You wanted a home and I was ready and willing to take you when a neighbor came and knocked on my door. She only had you for two days, she was the fourth house you had lived at. I will never forget how scared you looked that first day you entered my life. Your eyes were desperate. No wonder you were sad , you felt unloved, unworthy, no one wanted you. They lost out. You are the most magnificent animal: one who protects and serves for life. You are also a wild child full of playful energy. Your breed is a Dogo Argentino. I often wish I could have seen you as a little puppy. You are so intelligent. I have read that dogs know and understand as many words as a six-year-old. You know so much more than words, you know the language of life. Now I have to see you laying still with a wire in your leg, sitting in the grass while your pack plays around you.Hike and Orion injury 015

You play too hard, run too hard, and show off for your pack. I worry incessantly about you since you had already had a break before. That break was in your front paw, a very strange place. I saw you trip that day running down the stairs…your body is heavy on your legs when you fall. Oh, what a process that was. You would not stay still, you had a screw in the very tip of your pad. It was over six months of constant supervision and you not doing what should be done; which is rest. You ran, you played and nothing could keep you down, not even the cast that was constantly improved. You finally healed and I remember thinking “please never again!” However, here we are again, because you can’t stop when your pack calls you to play. I close the gates to the lake, but someone always opens them up and leaves them open. You love the water. I have no idea how you did this horrific injury but I am sure it was in the lake. When you enter the lake with supervision you are fine, but when you can just do what you want this is what happens. Never again will you be able to run free into the lake showing off, I will make sure of that. You cannot endure another injury. I cannot endure another injury on you.

My daughter’s birth year on a butterfly native to Colombia

The day of your surgery I awoke and went to you. I sat next to you just loving on you. I was very distressed to think you would be going under anesthesia just like humans do. I  stayed with you and prayed for a good outcome. The surgeon is very famous in Cali, Colombia for his skills. He had just recently put a dogs leg back together who had been shot and the bone shattered. He used a metal rod to connect the bone. When I heard of his success stories I knew you would be fine, but still I could not get over the feeling of trepidation inside my stomach. I did not get much done the day of your surgery. I was watching a movie, waiting for word on when you would be put under and there was the most amazing sign that came in the form of the #89 butterfly. This butterfly is native to Colombia and has the birth year of my daughter on its wings. It came to the windows surrounding the Villa Migelita Suite, and stayed for five minutes. I knew then that you would be fine. You were a gift from Misha. I know she was sending me a sign to calm me down. I was able to relax after the visit from this gorgeous butterfly.

So here we go again: another break, another healing process. I have asked so many to pray and send healing energy to you these last few days. It is all I can do besides making you comfortable. Please my Orion, no more. Stay still, heal and let us all love your magnificent self.hike and poco 004

The Sky is NOT the Limit

Parapente over the Valle del Cauca, Colombia

When I see the parapente fly over my Villa I think of bold choices. I chose to move to a foreign country and make a new life. It has not been easy, but it has been a dream accomplished. I am no longer young, but I still have a lot of life left to explore new horizons. I will always look to the mountains to find my soul.  I just need to look to the sky and know there are no limits on what I can do. Every day is a new beginning. I find myself enveloped inside the beauty surrounding me when I wake up each morning, the bit of clouds that allow the sun to shine through is what I see for my future. A beautiful day shines down upon me.

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “The Clothes (May) Make the (Wo)man.”

I was the girl who always had the latest styles, along with the designer prices that went with that style. I had a closet full of shoes, shirts, jeans, dresses, skirts, jackets, and accessories that would guarantee me a spot in any fashionista’s top ten. I knew how to pull  off the correct look, and religiously watched shows on the latest trends. I knew when I should wear a certain color nail polish and what was trending for any season. I had loved fashion since I was a Disco gal in the 80’s. I used to be a hair model in college and a disco dancer. These photo’s are from different centuries.

The red and white stripe picture is when I was a hair model in the early 80’s, the other is me in 2010 at the beach. I am still rocking white sunglasses. I always say accessories make a look. I use that advice even now. I am not a fashionista anymore but I still make sure the hair is in style along with the nails. I really have no use anymore for all of those stylish clothes I wore for years, nor for the cost of them. I realize this is not what makes me happy. I loved it then, I loathe it now. I prefer jeans, simple tops, and good hair these days. I will always exercise and take care of my skin. I am a fanatic about sunscreen. I guess I have evolved. I still love to look at the pictures of what is trending with celebrities. I enjoy all of my friend’s photos showing them in the latest styles. However, when I visit the states I buy cute t-shirts and jeans, along with new converse sneakers. I used to let clothes define me. Now I let me define me. I am happy being a bit simpler these days. Simplicity is my new norm, along with a peaceful outlook that fulfills my inner self. I enjoy this new look. I am defined by my inner self now, not clothes. I hope my inner self shines through in my current photos the way my past photos showed my love of fashion.
