The Sun VS The Shade

In response to The Daily Post’s weekly photo challenge: “Half and Half.”

A bit of sun separates the mountains of Colombia.

Oftentimes I ride my mountain bike along the challenging roads in the mountains of La Buitrera, Colombia and I see  a distinct separation of the sun on part of the mountains and shade on part of the mountains. “A painting in front of me” I think. The beauty is formidable. May God grant me this beauty forever, and if I die tomorrow I hope my view is just like this wherever I go.

I am an American who moved to Colombia to find peace after the devastating loss of my daughter. I bought and renovated a Villa, am learning Spanish, and writing as catharsis. This blog will be like a book with chapters. Each blog will be about my life in Colombia and my adventures. I hope you will enjoy the many new discoveries I am making every day about myself and another culture.

  1. That’s very beautiful, and it’s good that you pointed out the sunshine, it made me look at the photo more closely. When I see views like this I often imagine the difference between anyone who is stood in that sunshine and me in the shade, it’s quite an odd thought.

    1. No it is an artistic thought, as I sometimes think the same. Here in Colombia people walk these mountains with bags full of produce or products. They live these mountains for years and years never leaving. I think of all of that when I see this beauty. I wonder if they realize the beauty they live in. I sometimes feel I am in the shade looking at them and wanting to know their thoughts.

      1. That’s such a lovely sentiment, to think of them living that out their days amidst all of that. I think it’s human nature not to appreciate what’s right in front of you, but hopefully they do realise. It’s quite a metaphor for life really, that you need to step back and see something from afar to realise what it’s all about.

      2. Yes exactly Laura…exactly. It makes me appreciate what I have and what I have done in life. I really feel that since I have moved to Colombia I have to take a step back from everything I have done in my life.

    1. I enjoy every second of my life here in the Colombian mountains that change every time I look at them…sometimes it is so clear they are bathed in sunlight, other times just a touch of sun, and then when it is cloudy the clouds look magical. xo
